Stars young and old hold some interesting beliefs, although some are, admittedly more ‘out there’ than others. We may only see their public personas, but the religious, spiritual and sometimes otherworldly beliefs of the celebrities we look up to can make for quite startling reading. Here are a few that have caught my eye.
Whatever else he’s known for Justin Bieber is renowned for his Christian views. You could say that he wears his faith on his skin. He has an image of Jesus inked into his calf and another in Hebrew that spells out the word ‘Jesus’. But he goes out of his way to talk quite openly about his faith as well. So we can be sure that, for Justin, his faith is more than just skin deep.
Justin Timberlake, like the Biebster, may sport a Christian tattoo – he has a cross on his back – but the singer insists he is more spiritual than strictly religious. Quite what he means by that I can’t say, but it would certainly be interesting finding out!
Boy band the Jonas Brothers may have presented themselves as honest to goodness, God fearing puritans a few years ago, but the boys are growing up on the wild side if Joe’s raunchy 25th birthday antics in Las Vegas are anything to go by. It looks like the purity rings are a thing of the past!
That suggests another fascinating list: here are a few other A-listers who at one time or another have paraded their purity in the form of a ring: Miley Cirus (yes really!), rapper Teyana Taylor, American Idol winner Jordan Sparks, Disney starlets Selena Gomez and Demi Levato and, get this, Jessica Simpson wore one before she got married. She doesn’t wear it anymore!
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has declared himself to be a relaxed atheist. That sounds like he can’t even be bothered not to believe in anything, but I’m sure one or two people wouldn’t mind trying to shake him out of his lethargy!
Man of all talents Jared Leto has described himself as ‘Christian-other’ which is a little bit less lazy. It does beg the question what the ‘other’ bit is, but if it makes him happy who are we to argue? Jared’s concern for the environment is legendary however, and all power to him for that.
Can you believe that comedian Jimmy Fallon wanted to be a priest when he was a kid? Growing up in a staunch Catholic family in New York, altar boy Fallon had his eyes set on a spiritual career. But then he discovered comedy and the rest is his story (like ‘history’ – geddit?) Maybe I should leave the comedy to the professionals!
Oscar winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow claims to talk to her late father’s wedding ring because, she says, it contains his spirit. Who are we to argue?
Former X Factor judge Cheryl Cole consulted a psychic for clairvoyant readings when her marriage to England soccer star Ashly Cole was in trouble. And stars like Dustin Hoffman, Carmen Electra and Desperate Housewives Eva Longoria, Nicolette Sheridan and Teri Hatcher have all gone on record as having similarly turned to a clairvoyant for advice in the past. Clearly, there is something to be said for it!
Lady Gaga has a thing for ghosts apparently. She has been reported as buying a $5,000 electro-magnetic ghost busting machine to clear out evil spirits from anywhere she’s appearing. They’d have to be pretty scary spooks if you ask me!
Keanu Reeves talks about a ghostly white suit that entered his room when he was a kid and that still haunts his imagination to this day. And bad girl Ke$ha reckons that her hit Tik Tok was based on an experience of living in a haunted house. And let’s not forget heavyweight actor Russell Crowe who was trying to convince the world that he’d seen a UFO recently.
The list could go on. There is something about the celebrity circuit that seems to encourage either a very public display of spiritual sensitivity or a sort of spooky otherworldliness. It might start out with something as innocent as a ring or a tattoo, but who knows where it might lead?
It makes me think that sometimes think that being a simple fan girl may not be such a bad thing after all.
